The Colorado River Lower Basin states of Arizona, California and New Mexico have sent a two-year proposal on how much water each state can use.

The plan is consistent with the City of Scottsdale’s planning assumptions, according to City Manager Greg Caton and Scottsdale Water Interim Senior Director Thyra Ryden-Diaz.

“The proposal is structured as an interim measure focused on stabilizing conditions at Lake Mead and reducing the likelihood of more severe shortage tiers in the near term,” a memo dated May 4 from the two to Mayor Lisa Borowsky and the rest of the City Council says.

The agreement calls for the reduction of 1.5 million acre feet annually, with 760,000 of those acre feet coming from Arizona.

An acre foot is enough water to cover one acre with one foot of water, approximately 325,851 gallons.

“This corresponds to an estimated 50% reduction in total Central Arizona Project canal volume, while municipal and industrial supplies would experience reductions of roughly 20%, depending on the user,” the memo states.

Scottsdale gets between 70% and 75% of its water from the Central Arizona Project
