ASM (Advanced Semiconductor Materials), a Netherlands-based company that makes machines that make semiconductor chips, took another step toward moving its North American headquarters to Scottsdale.
The Scottsdale City Council voted unanimously during its Sept. 17 meeting to approve a development agreement to put infrastructure in place to support the new facility, which will be located on the northwest corner of Mayo Boulevard and Miller Road immediately south of the Loop 101.
The city will reimburse ASM up to $6.4 million for the improvements and the company will cover the rest of the costs. Scottsdale Economic Development Director Teri Killgore said the amount could end up being less though.
Council member Tom Durham pointed out before the vote that ASM will pay for the infrastructure it requires and the city’s portion of the bill is only for the rest of the infrastructure the company won’t be using but the public will.
“The money we’re being asked to reimburse tonight is money the city would be spending in any event to complete Mayo Boulevard, to complete Miller (Road) and so on so we’re just sort of assisting them in doing the infrastructure so they can get their project going,” Durham said. “We’re only reimbursing them for money that would be our own responsibility for infrastructure.”
He also noted that ASM is not asking for a rezoning of the property because it’s already zoned for industrial use.
ASM intends to move its current operation in Phoenix over to Scottsdale, with operations beginning in first quarter of 2026.
The project is a $400 million investment for a 400,000 square-foot building.
