Town of Fountain Hills Senior Planner Farhad Tavassoli presented the Planning and Zoning Commission with potential changes to the sign regulations in the town’s Zoning Ordinance at the commission’s May 12 meeting.
Tavassoli led the commission through the proposed changes he had outlined. Those included up to four A-Frame signs for businesses with no restrictions on display times. It was also proposed that the maximum sign area be increased from six to eight square feet.
Commissioner Mathew Corrigan said he liked those proposals and sees a need to support merchants and believes the numbers are reasonable.
Vice Chairman Clayton Corey and Commissioner Scott Schlossberg both said they were opposed to allowing businesses to always leave the signs up. Corey said he would be concerned about the clutter of the additional signs and wondered if they would really be effective.
Commissioner Nick Porter asked Tavassoli whether there had been any complaints from businesses that the current regulations were unreasonable. Tavassoli said he had no documented complaints.
“Why does it need to be changed?” Porter asked.
Commission Chairman Dan Kovacevic noted that the commission had just completed a review about 18 months ago.
Porter made the motion to recommend no changes, and Corey seconded. However, Development Services Director John Wesley said the meeting’s agenda had not allowed for action on the item and no public hearing.
Wesley said they would repost the item with a public hearing for a later date, probably August, as the commission will not meet in July, and timing would not allow for a posting for June.
