On April 22, Scottsdale REALTORS® hosted its fourth annual Fair Housing Symposium.
Area journalist Steve Goldstein moderated speakers Kimberly Winson-Geideman, clinical professor & director W.P. Carey School of Business Real Estate Division, and Ebony Reed, co-author of the best-selling book “Fifteen Cents on the Dollar“.
Dr. Winson-Geideman shared a market overview from the 2024 “State of Housing in Arizona” report by the Arizona Research Center for Housing Equity and Sustainability (ARCHES).
According to the U.S. Census, the professor showed that Arizona added twice as many Asians as Hispanics from 2010 to 2022.
“People will say, ‘I don’t understand why there’s a wealth gap, because at my job everyone is paid the same’, said Reed. “And then we help them understand, that is income. Income can be an input into wealth, but income and wealth are not the same thing.”
According to Federal Reserve Board data, Asians had the highest median wealth in 2022.
When people are asking us about DEI or what will happen to the gap without affirmative action,” Reed said. “We point them to the data.”
Despite growth and affluency, Winson-Geideman showed that Arizona Asians demonstrated a lower homeownership rate.
